Personal Loan Requirements: What to Prepare Before Applying

A personal loan application asks a lender to decide whether it can lend to you and on what terms. A request to a matching service is an earlier step. Preparing your information helps you compare the resulting options without confusing a connection with an approval.

General information, not a personalized recommendation or a loan offer. Lender terms and state rules can differ. About our matching service and compensation.

What to know first

  • There is no single income or credit-score cutoff shared by all lenders.
  • Compare the cash you receive and total repayment, not just the requested amount.
  • A completed request does not guarantee a connection, an offer or funding.

What lenders consider

Lenders can consider credit reports and scores, income, existing debts, the amount requested and the repayment period. Some also review bank-account activity. Their standards differ, and a higher income does not automatically overcome a payment history or debt burden that falls outside a particular lender’s criteria.

Start with the lender’s actual eligibility rules for your state and product. Check any age, residency and account requirements before sending sensitive information. A matching website’s form accepting your details does not establish that an eligible lender is available.

Information to have ready

Use this as a preparation checklist, not a promise that every lender asks for the same documents. Supply accurate information and use the lender’s verified secure channel if it asks for supporting records. Do not send your Social Security number or banking documents through an ordinary support email.

  • Identity and contact details that match your current records.
  • Recent evidence of the income you want the lender to consider, including its frequency.
  • A list of required debt payments and regular household expenses.
  • The amount you actually need, its purpose and a repayment budget.
  • Account details only after checking who is collecting them, why they are needed and the applicable privacy notice.

Check your budget before checking offers

Subtract essential living costs and existing obligations from take-home income, then leave room for irregular expenses. A payment that fits only if nothing goes wrong may still create problems. The longest term can lower a payment while increasing the interest paid over time.

If you need a specific amount in your account, ask whether an origination fee will be deducted. Compare offers for the same amount received and the same repayment period. Use our calculator to explore the tradeoff, then rely on the lender’s written disclosure for actual terms.

From a request to an actual loan

First, read the service and credit-authorization disclosures before submitting a matching request. A partner may accept the request for further review or ask you to continue on its website. That response is not itself a loan agreement.

Next, verify the lender’s identity and review any additional information or inquiry authorization it requires. If a lender offers a loan, compare its APR, fees, payment schedule and total repayment before signing. Funding is a separate stage after approval and agreement; timing depends on the lender and payment system.

Common questions

What credit score do I need for a personal loan?

There is no universal minimum. Each lender has its own criteria and may consider income, debts and other information in addition to a score. We do not publish a score that guarantees approval.

Does a request guarantee the amount I ask for?

No. A lender may decline, request more information or offer a different amount. Check the net proceeds after any deducted fees.

What if a lender declines my application?

Read the decision notice and any instructions for obtaining the reasons. Review your credit reports for errors before repeatedly applying. A decline by one lender is not a reason to accept an unaffordable loan elsewhere.
